Young children at the 41 st Sharjah International Book Fair gained an introduction into the art
of paper quilling, from the shapes that form the basis of design to the importance of colour
selection and combination at an exciting workshop held at Expo Centre Sharjah.

“All we need here is glue, paper and the quilling tool,” says the art instructor, as she starts
the hands-on workshop. “We have also provided a stencil board, so children can choose the
size and shape of the pattern they want to design before they transform their work into a
picture.”

Sitting silently, concentrating on what they are doing, children look completely engrossed in
the activity in front of them. While some are patiently applying glue to thin strips of brightly
coloured paper, others are twirling these paper strips into different shapes, ensuring they
don’t unfurl.

“The first thing I tell them to do is create all the different shapes they want, using the paper
and stencil. When they have all the designs, that is when they should start to decorate their
picture,” said the instructor.

Appropriate for children 9 years of age and above, the workshop is an ideal escape from the
routine of school. It also allows them the flexibility to indulge in a creative pursuit individually
or within a group.

A matchless opportunity for bibliophiles and book lovers to engage with thousands of
industry professionals from the across the region and around the world, the 41st Sharjah
International Book Fair (SIBF) is hosting a total of 1,500 activities led by 150 guests from 57
countries, until November 13 at Expo Centre Sharjah.
