Nottingham Forest have opened talks with Manchester United to sign goalkeeper Dean Henderson, with the player interested in the move.

Football journalist Fabrizio Romano reports that newly promoted Forest want to sign Henderson on loan with the option to buy the 25-year-old for around £20million.

Forest may face competition for Henderson however with Newcastle also reportedly linked with keeper.

Henderson is keen on securing first-team football, something that will be hard to do at Old Trafford given David de Gea’s resurgence in form.

The United academy graduate rose to prominence a few seasons ago after successful back-to-back loan spells at Sheffield United, where he helped the Blades get promoted from the Championship and then secured their Premier League survival with a remarkable ninth place finish.

Following that, he was integrated into the Red Devils first-team and after a series of impressive performances, he surpassed the struggling De Gea in the pecking order and earned a place in the England squad for Euro 2020.

Then-United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer described Henderson as a world-class keeper and claimed: ‘He will be England’s No.1 and Man United’s No.1 at some point.’

However, during the Euros Henderson suffered a serious hip injury, before catching COVID-19 just before the start of the season, and in his absence De Gea reclaimed his spot and the Spaniard’s inspired form limited Henderson to just three appearances.

While new United boss Erik ten Hag is yet to fully assess his squad, Henderson is expected to leave, either on loan or permanently, in order to get game time, with a place in the England squad for the 2022 World Cup at stake.

Everton’s Jordan Pickford and Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale are Gareth Southgate’s first two picks to go in-between the sticks, but the third spot is very open, with Burnley’s Nick Pope and former West Brom keeper Sam Johnstone also vying for a place on the plane to Qatar.
