Bryson DeChambeau says joining the Saudi-funded LIV Golf Invitational Series was a ‘business decision’.

The 28-year-old recently became one of the rebel tour’s most high-profile signings after the likes of Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson and Lee Westwood already pledged their allegiance.

LIV Golf’s first event was hosted at the Centurion Club in St Albans last week where South African Charl Schwartzel came out the winner.

The next tournament on the fledgling circuit will take place in Portland, Oregon later this month where the 2020 US Open champion DeChambeau plans to join the field along with former Masters winner Patrick Reed.

Speaking ahead of the US Open, DeChambeau said: ‘It was a business decision first and foremost and that’s all there was to it.

‘It’s given me a lot more opportunity outside of the game of golf and given me more time with my family and my future family. So for me, that was the decision.

‘There was a lot of financials to it and a lot of time, I get to have a life outside of the game of golf as well.’

Last week, the 2011 Masters champion Schwartzel picked up a huge cheque worth over £3million for his victory in Hertfordshire.

Meanwhile, a similar prize will be on offer at Pumpkin Ridge on 30 June when DeChambeau makes his LIV Golf debut.

The Saudi tour’s eight events, which are funded by the state’s Public Investment Fund, boast over £200m worth of prize money.

Last week, the PGA Tour suspended 17 of its members for playing in the rebel series and say future participants will be handed the same punishment.

However, DeChambeau – who is still keen to play on the PGA Tour – added: ‘I would love to, it would be an honour (play on the PGA Tour). But it is not my decision to make. That’s someone else’s decision that’s making that for me.

‘I would love to play the Memorial. I would love to play the Arnold Palmer (Invitational).’
