Manchester United will wait to sign Frenkie de Jong this summer as they have reservations about N’Golo Kante.

The Red Devils are seeking a new central midfielder in the transfer window following the departures of Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic.

Kante, whose contract at Chelsea runs out next year, would be a strong addition with his vast Premier League experience and track record of winning trophies at Stamford Bridge.

However, according to The Athletic, United are concerned about the Frenchman’s injury problems which saw him miss large parts of last season.

On Friday, reports in Spain suggested De Jong has agreed a move to Old Trafford from Barcelona.

At 25-years-old, De Jong represents a smart signing for the future but the Dutchman will cost considerably more than the 31-year-old Kante.

United have also been linked with Declan Rice but reaching a deal for West Ham’s captain seems unlikely with the Hammers wanting upwards of £100million.

New manager Erik ten Hag is keen to add to his squad this summer after United finished sixth last season and went a fifth successive year without a trophy.

The former Ajax boss also wants a striker and centre-half but will find it hard to lure players to Old Trafford with no Champions League football on offer.

United suffered a blow this week when it emerged Liverpool were in advanced talks to sign Benfica centre-forward Darwin Nunez.

The Uruguayan was thought to be one of Ten Hag’s top targets after impressing last season by scoring 26 goals in 28 league appearances.

The departure of Edinson Cavani has left United with just Cristiano Ronaldo as a central striker who, at 37, will struggle to play over 40 matches next term.

The Portuguese ended the season as the club’s top goalscorer but was often criticised for his lack of pressing.
