Will Smith posted a cryptic comment about ‘choosing chaos’ as he posed with wife Jada Pinkett Smith ahead of the 94th Academy Awards in Los Angeles – and got in the last word after his altercation with Chris Rock.
The renowned actor, 53, was nominated for – and subsequently won – the best actor award at the prestigious awards for his role in biopic King Richard.
But what should have been a shining moment in his decades-long career was overshadowed when, minutes before he was announced as the winner, he walked on stage and slapped Chris.
The comedian had made a joke about Jada’s short haircut, comparing her to GI Jane; the actress had shaved her head as she suffers from hair-loss disorder alopecia.
Before the violent display, Will had posted a video to Instagram of him and Jada preparing to grace the 2022 Oscars, with a clip showing them happily posing together.
He captioned the post: ‘Me ‘n @jadapinkettsmith got all dressed up to choose chaos.’
Despite the eerily prophetic nature of the post, Will had uploaded it hours before he hit Chris, and before the Oscars had even started.
However, after his altercation with the comedian Will added a comment to his post, which was likely about the thing that everybody is talking about today.
‘You can’t invite people from Philly or Baltimore nowhere!!!’ the Oscar-winner joked; he hails from Philadelphia while wife Jada is from Baltimore.
The actor’s striking of comedian Chris has sparked outrage online both between celebrities and the public, though Chris’ joke has also proven deeply unpopular.
In 2018 Jada revealed she suffers from autoimmune disorder alopecia, a physical health condition that causes her hair to fall out. It is often associated with stress and anxiety. There is no cure, but treatments are available to slow down the loss of hair.
She said at the time, having covered her head with turbans: ‘I’ve been getting lots of questions about why I’ve been wearing this turban. Well, I’ve been having issues with hair loss.
‘And I’ll tell you it was terrifying when it first started. I was in the shower one day and then just handfuls of hair, just in my hands, and I was like “oh my God am I going bald?”
‘It was one of those times in my life when I was literally shaking with fear.’
Jada could be seen looking distinctly unimpressed and rolling her eyes when Chris made a joke about her looking like the fictional GI Jane, who famously sported a buzz cut, and Will took to the stage seconds later.
King Richard actor Will, who first appeared to be laughing at the joke, walked up to Chris and slapped the comedian before telling him: ‘Keep my wife’s name out of your f**king mouth’.
