Kate Garraway has revealed that a TV crew had to carry Derek Draper down to the wellbeing garden she had created for him, after the lift to her back yard was not working during filming.

The presenter, 54, was seen showing Derek, also 54, the amazing garden she had created for him while he was in hospital battling Covid-19, in her new show Love Your Garden.

However, she revealed that it was only possible to film the touching scenes thanks to the ITV documentary crew who had to carry Derek and his wheelchair down some steps to the garden.

After Susanna Reid noted that Derek ‘looks so well’, Kate explained on Good Morning Britain on Thursday: ‘He looks great, now of course, this was a project I did last year. I realise there’s a lot of Garraway around at the moment because it’s all been held up by Covid!

‘But I did it [the documentary] throughout the season last year so that was actually Derek towards the end of last summer when we got some fruits from the autumn.

‘And we still hadn’t got the lift working into the garden so it did involve the entire Love Your Garden team having to carry him down the stairs, so a big thanks to their muscle and he was able to get outside.’

Discussing the beautiful moments of Derek seeing their garden in bloom for the first time since leaving hospital, Kate added: ‘It was amazing, absolutely amazing.

‘It was one of the things when he was in the coma – we talked about this didn’t we and with you Richard [Arnold].

‘I would tell him, “We’re going to get you back into your chair in the garden” and things to describe and relate to him so it was lovely to see it.’

The programme saw Kate transform her family’s green space with the help of gardening expert Alan Titchmarsh, who guided her as she revamped the area to suit the changing needs of her family.

Kate has also installed a lift – which wasn’t working at the time of filming – to allow Derek to have access to their outdoor space after being left with ongoing health issues and requiring round-the-clock care.

She told the camera: ‘This has been so much more than I thought it was going to be. I’ve taken the garden which is a place of family fun and turned it into something that can suit the way our family has to live now.

‘If you look past the initial beauty of the plants, it can give you so much more.’

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
