Sarah Michelle Gellar shared a loving message to mark the 25-year anniversary of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

It has been more than two decades since we first got a glimpse at the iconic Buffy Summers, played expertly by Sarah, as she took on demons, the undead and high school in equal measures.

Side note: How has it been that long?!

Taking to Instagram, she posted a snap of herself beside the official clapboard on set, as well as the official poster for the series, in honor of the poignant day.

‘25 years ago today I had the honor to introduce the world to my version of Buffy Anne Summers,’ the 44-year-old captioned the post, dedicating it to viewers.

‘It was an uphill battle. A mid season replacement, on a new network based on a movie, that was by no means a giant success.

‘But then there was you. The fans. You believed in us. You made this happen. You are the reason 25 years later we are still celebrating.

‘So today we celebrate you as well. #wwbd.’

Michelle Trachtenberg, who played Dawn Summers in the series, was among those sharing their love for the actress in the comments.

‘Congrats big sister. There was no 🗝 without your 🔮 Magic @sarahmgellar,’ she penned.

Fans also flooded her post with love for the character, thanking Sarah for her portrayal of the heroine.

‘You saved the world a lot,’ one wrote.

’25 years later and still giving so many people courage to continue striving for goodness in dark times. Much love. #wwbd,’ another replied.

‘“When it’s dark and I’m all alone and I’m scared or freaked out or whatever, I always think, ‘What would Buffy do?’. You’re my hero.” Thank you so much Sarah,’ a follower said.

‘You have no idea what your character means to me.’

An Instagram user added: ‘Buffy, the character and your portrayal has helped me through so much over the years.

‘Thank you for Buffy Anne Summers. She’s saved my world. A lot.’

Sarah starred as the slayer for all 144 episodes of the show, from 1997 to 2003.

Clearly no one can get enough of Buffy, as there have been rumors of a possible reboot or revival.

Speaking of whether she would get involved, the I Know What You Did Last Summer actress previously told Hollywood Reporter: ‘If there’s more story to be told, I think it’s interesting.

‘Our demons were the metaphors for the horrors of high school and adolescence, and I think that there’s definitely new horrors of adolescence. The idea of a chosen one would certainly [be] very interesting at this time.

‘I do think it’s tricky because we were already a reboot. So, I don’t know. I actually don’t know what’s happening with it. I think it’s amazing that so many people are still so passionate about her and her story.’
