The end of Droughtlander is so close that fans can almost taste it as popular historical fantasy drama Outlander finally returns to our screens with season 6 after a two-year break.

The last we saw of Jamie (Sam Heughan), Claire (Caitriona Balfe), Brianna (Sophie Skelton), Roger (Richard Rankin) and all at Fraser’s Ridge in season five, Claire had been rescued after a brutal attack by Lionel Brown (Ned Dennehy) and his men for her medical practices, while Roger had survived a mistaken hanging.

Brianna had finally got her revenge on the dastardly Stephen Bonnet (Edward Speleers) and Jamie had lost his godfather Murtagh (Duncan Lacroix) as he struggled to balance his personal loyalty with fulfilling his duties with the British.

Young Ian (John Bell) had also finally returned from the Mohawk, and subsequently learned the truth of Claire, Brianna and Roger’s time-travelling origins.

After that swift recap, season six will see the Fraser-MacKenzie clan in 1773 tested further by the looming danger of the American Revolutionary War, as well as tensions from within the Ridge after the arrival of some new characters.

Who is in the cast of Outlander season 6?

All the series leads are back, with further drama in store for Jamie, Claire, Roger and Brianna.

Young Ian is also settling in again at the Ridge, while Fergus (César Domboy) and Marsali (Lauren Lyle) await the birth of another child.

The new season heralds the arrival of the Christie family, with Tom Christie (Mark Lewis Jones) a fellow inmate of Jamie’s past from Ardsmuir Prison turning up at the Ridge in response to Jamie’s open invitation for settlers.

He brings with him children Allan (Versailles’ Alexander Vlahos) and Malva (Jessica Reynolds), who takes a keen interest in Claire’s work.

Although the end of season five covered parts of author Diana Gabaldon’s sixth book in the Outlander series, A Breath of Snow and Ashes, it’s believed the sixth season will continue taking inspiration from the sixth book in its curtailed season of eight episodes.
