Tom Fletcher scooped two 10s to give him his highest-yet score on the Strictly Come Dancing leader board on Saturday with a traditional Paso Doble.

Dressed in an eye-catching red and blue costume alongside professional partner Amy Dowden, the McFly frontman revealed it had been ‘the best week’ after initially struggling with the routine to begin with.

The judges were full of praise, with Craig Revel Horwood telling him: ‘My goodness you did such a fantastic job, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a paso from a male celebrity that convincing,’ while Motsi Mabuse praised him for ‘such a strong performance’.

Anton Du Beke branded it ‘joyous’, as he complimented Amy on her choreography, while Shirley Ballas declared: ‘You executed it superbly – well done.’

The pair were scored 38, their highest score of the series, with 10s from Motsi and Shirley and a nine each from Craig and Anton, who joked ‘oh dear!’ as he ended Tom’s run of ‘10’ paddleboards.

There were also standing ovations from Motsi and Shirley, as well as Tom’s wife Giovanna Fletcher, former Queen of the Jungle, who was tearful after the success of her husband’s performance.

During training, Tom was visited by his drummer bandmate Harry Judd, who won Strictly in 2011 alongside Aliona Vilani.

While Tom admitted it was a ‘complicated’ dance, Harry warned him that after the halfway point of the competition it ‘gets harder’ as ‘more is expected of you’.

Tom joked: ‘Amy likes to go on YouTube and show me your videos by the way’, with Harry interjecting, ‘To show how much better I am than you!’

Harry then got serious with his advice and added: ‘Just go week by week and think, ‘How can I make this dance amazing?’

Tom and Amy were pipped to the top of the leader board by Kai and AJ, whose vibrant Charleston got them 39.

Strictly Come Dancing continues at 7:15pm on Sunday on BBC One.
