We see Angela (Joanne Froggatt), a woman with an idyllic home life and charismatic husband Olivier (Michiel Huisman) and their family on the surface – but it is not long before cracks begin to form as viewers learn the truth.

The six-part drama makes for tough viewing as the depths of Olivier’s abuse is revealed.

With the new show premiering on our screens tonight, here is all you need to know about Angela Black.

Liar actress Joanne Froggatt leads the cast as the titular character, domestic abuse victim Angela Black, who is presented with having a perfect life with devastating secrets below the surface.

Game of Thrones actor Michiel Huisman stars as her abusive husband, successful businessman Olivier.

They are joined in the cast by Doctor Who’s Samuel Adewunmi, who plays private investigator Ed, who spills some of her husband’s deepest, darkest secrets.

It’s A Sin actress Ashleigh McGuire also stars as Judy, who works alongside Angela at a kennel.

Is Angela Black based on a book?

While Angela Black isn’t based on a book, show creators put the plot together from a string of stories from real life abuse victims.

Writers Jack and Harry Williams spoke with staff in shelters, as well as consultants, to make sure that their series reflected the true experience that many in Angela’s position go through, and the impact this has on them.

Detailing their work behind the scenes, Jack told ITV: ‘I think the key thing is that this is something that happens a lot, but people do not always understand or read about it.

‘I think it is very easy to watch shows about abuse and go, “Well… I’d just leave”. It is not as simple.’

‘It was important that we do it justice and that we were accurate about the psychology of the abused and the abuser, both sides of the story,’ Harry added.

‘It was important to try and be truthful with it.’

Angela Black begins at 9pm on ITV.
