Jerry Seinfeld has addressed the recent conversation about his 2007 animation Bee Movie, with many pointing out the strange ‘sexual aspect’ to the children’s film.

Bee Movie follows, well, a bee named Barry B Benson who finds himself crushing on the human florist (Renee Zellweger) who is helping him to navigate life in New York City after graduating from college.

In recent years, online forums and social media users have discussed how weird the concept is – of an insect falling in love with a human – and it seems Seinfeld agrees with them.

The 67-year-old, who wrote the script and voiced the bee, said on The Late Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in a half-joking manner: ‘I apologise for what seems to be a certain uncomfortable subtle sexual aspect of the Bee Movie.

‘[It] really was not intentional, but after it came out, I realised this is really not appropriate for children because the bee seemed to have a thing for the girl.’

He added: ‘And we don’t really want to pursue that as an idea in children’s entertainment.’

Bee Movie was released with a PG-rating in the UK and grossed close to $300million at the global box office. It featured a star-studded cast, including Chris Rock, Kathy Bates, Matthew Broderick, John Goodman, Oprah Winfrey and Ray Liotta.

Reacting to Seinfeld’s explanation, one viewer commented: ‘If the bee movie had subtle romantic undertones then Santa exists. Those romantic tones were obvious as f**k.’

Another suggested: ‘How about that it’s really just “My Girl” told from a different perspective?’

Defending the storyline, one other: ‘What? People hating Bee Movie? dislike maybe but hate? It’s such a strong emotion for a simple animation about bees getting credit for their work and lil weird romance that I block my mind from.’

If you’re keen to see what the fuss is about and you haven’t yet experienced Bee Movie, it’s available to watch via Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.
