The Last Leg viewers have praised host Adam Hills after he spoke out about Sarah Everard’s murder on the show, addressing male violence as the root of the problem.

Everard was murdered by Wayne Couzens, who was a serving Metropolitan Police officer at the time of the offence.

Since Couzens’ sentencing, many have been offering safety tips to women – without speaking out about male violence.

Pointing out the problem, Adam told men watching the show that women have had to imagine their worst nightmares this week, while ‘all you have to do is have an awkward conversation with your mate’.

He encouraged men to look out for unacceptable behaviour, adding: ‘Those little things can lead to something big.’

Adam went on to urge men not to laugh off or dismiss unacceptable behaviour, pointing out: ‘If you’re doing any of those things, you’re part of the problem.’

Viewers spoke out to praise the segment, with one writing on Twitter: ‘Thank you @adamhillscomedy and @TheLastLeg for addressing male violence as the real problem here. Asking men to call out sexist comments their friends make & asking men to challenge unacceptable sexist behaviour. Thank you. #TheLastLeg #thelastleg.’

‘YESSSSS to @adamhillscomedy on #thelastleg calling out male violence and calling out your male friends for their behaviour. #IsItOk to use your platform for good? Absolutely @TheLastLeg,’ another added.

One more said: ‘Completely agree with @adamhillscomedy on #TheLastLeg. We deal with violence against women by dealing with the men. Calling out inappropriate behaviour and language. We need to step up, not telling women to check the police if they’re stopped by the police. Seriously.’

Couzens was recently sentenced at the Old Bailey, being told he would die behind bars.

After pleading guilty in July, Couzens was sacked by the Met, who said they are ‘sickened, angered and devastated by this man’s crimes which betray everything we stand for’.

The Last Leg airs Fridays at 10pm on Channel 4.
