Demi Lovato has admitted they too get confused over being non-binary.
The Dancing With the Devil hitmaker, 29, came out as non-binary in May and now uses they/them pronouns.
Opening up about what their identity means to them, the singer told the Today show: ‘The way that I explain being non-binary to people, or gender non-conforming, is for me personally, I can’t speak to everyone in their experience, when I came to the realisation that I am equally as masculine as I am feminine.
‘My masculine and feminine energy are equal, so much so that I may be wearing a dress and heels right now, but I don’t identify as just a woman, or just a man, and I identify as both.’
They also assured they ‘have a lot of grace’ when it comes to everyday people misgendering them, and understands there will be mix ups.
The former Disney star confessed to getting their own pronouns confused sometimes, as there isn’t necessarily a gender neutral term for everything.
They joked: ‘I still mess up sometimes and say, “Oh, I can’t wait to be an aunt one day,” and I’m like, “Wait, what word do I use?” I think for that one we’re going to use “aunkle.”’
The actor also spoke about their pansexuality, explaining that they are ‘attracted to human beings,’ regardless of gender.
‘I don’t hold myself back from sharing my love with anybody,’ they added.
Demi shared their coming out with the world earlier this year with a video on social media.
They said ‘healing and self-reflective work’ over the past 18 months revealed to them that they identify as non-binary.
They/them pronouns ‘best represent the fluidity’ Demi feels in their gender expression and allows them to be the truest ‘most authentic’ version of themselves.
However, they wanted to make it clear that they are still very much on a journey of self-discovery and doesn’t want to be viewed as ‘an expert or a spokesperson.’
Demi sent ‘so much love’ to fans who are struggling to come to terms with their own identity.
