David Mitchell took a cheeky dig at the Strictly Come Dancing judges as he stuck up for his friend Robert Webb after his first dance of the competition.

The Peep Show star and professional dance partner Dianne Buswell performed a Cha Cha to Rasputin by Boney M in the first live show of the series.

The comedian looked happy to be there in a shiny red and gold outfit that matched with his pro partner’s.

He was praised by the judges – Shirley Ballas, Motsi Mabuse, Craig Revel Horwood and Anton Du Beke – for entertaining viewers but there were criticisms about technical aspects of the routine.

Robert and Dianne were scored 20 points in total.

Appearing on Thursday’s The One Show, David commented how he felt the scoring was a little unfair.

Asked by hosts Alex Jones and Jermaine Jenas if he had tuned in to see his co-star, David said: ‘I certainly did and it was brilliant, and I would say under-praised by the judges.

‘He was due at least another four to six marks I would say, so yeah, it’s brilliant.’

Despite known for being the funny man, Robert vowed to take the competition seriously.

‘I am taking it seriously,’ Robert insisted as he spoke to Metro.co.uk and other press. ‘That part of the audience that recognises me at all might think I’m here to send it off. I’m absolutely not.’

He continued: ‘I’m not here to muck around’, before stressing: ‘I’ll be doing it all properly.’

Robert also revealed David’s reaction when he told him he would be taking to the floor on Strictly.

‘He was absolutely delighted,’ Robert shared. ‘I don’t know if it’s necessarily obvious, because we were in Peep Show, but David and I have always been quite mainstream in our hearts.

‘One of the first conversations we ever had we talked about how much we loved Morecambe and Wise. We’re not one of the cool people.

‘Strictly is many things, but cool isn’t one of the first things that springs to mind.’

The One Show airs weekdays from 7pm on BBC One.
