The Last Of Us Part 2 multiplayer game is bigger than anyone realised

It sounds like The Last Of Us Part 2 multiplayer spin-off is bigger and more ambitious than originally thought.

It’s been two years since Naughty Dog announced that The Last Of Us Part 2 would release without the planned Factions multiplayer mode, with the studio opting to focus its efforts on the single-player campaign.

Instead, it was decided to release a separate multiplayer spin-off, but it’s still never been shown in public and there’s been almost no real information on it.

In a recent community update, made to celebrate The Last Of Us Day, Naughty Dog’s senior manager of communications Rochelle Snyder acknowledged the fan demand for the multiplayer game. And although the team still isn’t ready to show anything, it sounds like the project is far bigger than initially believed.

‘In short, we’re working on it – we see the community comments as many of you clamour for multiplayer and want updates. For now, we’ll say that we love what the team is developing and want to give them time to build out their ambitious project, we’ll reveal more when it’s ready!’

What exactly Snyder means by ambitious isn’t entirely clear. Although, last month, The Last Of Us Part 2 co-director Vinit Agarwal described the project as a ‘cinematic experience,’ which implies that Naughty Dog wants to do more than just make your standard team deathmatch or battle royale game.

Snyder continues, ‘To that end, we’ve been busy growing our team inside the kennel since The Last Of Us Part 2 launched and are currently in full swing of hiring for MP-related positions (hint hint), so if you or somebody you know qualifies for anything you see on our jobs page, apply!’

Aside from this, the only other information fans have to go on was an incredibly short piece of leaked footage that popped up online last year. What was shown was most certainly a follow-up to the original Factions mode in the first The Last Of Us game, but it didn’t really confirm much else beyond its existence.

With no real window provided, it’s impossible to say when Naughty Dog will finally lift the lid on the project – especially as it wasn’t part of the recent State of Play event.

At this rate, it’s likely that the TV show based on the first game will have started airing before it’s revealed.
