Footballers’ Wives actress Laila Rouass has given her opinion on the ongoing ‘Wagatha Christie’ court case between Rebekah Vardy and Coleen Rooney, calling the women ‘lightweights’.

Laila, 50, who played Amber Gates on the iconic noughties series, joked that if the conflict had happened as a storyline on the show, the two WAGs would have likely ‘had it out’ with each other physically and then ‘moved on’.

Speaking to The Sun, the actress said: ‘If it was Footballers’ Wives they’d have had it out in the players’ lounge, none of this court business, they would have ripped each other’s t*ts off, ripped each other’s hair extensions out and moved on.

‘They would have dealt with it that way.’

She then added: ‘I think Coleen and Rebekah are lightweights, to be honest.’

The ‘Wagatha Christie’ feud earned its nickname due to the apparent detective work Coleen, who is married to Wayne Rooney, had done before alleging that Rebekah had sold stories on her to the press.

In 2019, Coleen publicly posted about Rebekah’s Instagram account allegedly being the only one that could view false stories she had deliberately planted in an attempt to find out who was leaking them to the press.

Rebekah has strongly denied the leak was her.

Coleen scored a victory in the case in July, after Rebekah was ordered to pay £10,500 towards her legal fees, although Rebekah also saw the High Court throw out part of her rival’s defence as ‘irrelevant or peripheral’ to the case.

The case is ongoing and expected to resume this month.

Footballers’ Wives, which is now enjoying a boost thanks to its availability on BritBox, originally ran for five series until 2006, and featured plenty of drama, including court battles, murders and a baby being smothered to death by a dog.

Laila’s character Amber also found an arch-rival in Zoë Lucker’s Tanya, resulting in an infamous cat fight.

Looking back on the programme, the Holby City star called it ‘one of the best times ever’ and revealed that scripts would often seem ‘crazy’ or ‘ridiculous’ before real-life events would follow suit.

She explained: ‘Then we were about to start filming and a story would come out where a footballer has done exactly the thing we thought was over the top, and we’d think, “What do we do now?”.’
