Andreas Pereira has been informed he will have the chance to win over new Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag and be part of the Dutchman’s squad next season.
Pereira, 26, has not played for United since June 2020, joining Brazilian side Flamengo on loan last August after spending the previous season with Lazio.
United were thought to have agreed a permanent deal with Flamengo but the club have since stalled the deal due to concerns over Pereira’s performances – stemming from a costly mistake that led to his side losing the Copa Libertadores final to rivals Palmeiras.
His loan spell will end this month and according to Yahoo Brasil, the door has been left open for him to return to Old Trafford where he has one year left on his contract.
According to the report, United’s football director John Murtough has contacted Pereira to inform him ten Hag believes he ‘fits the desired squad profile’ for next season.
The Dutchman will soon contact Pereira personally to discuss plans with him and are not currently planning to sell him to Flamengo. United have the option to extend the Brazilian’s contract by a further year.
Ten Hag and United are seeking to rebuild United’s midfield options with Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong their top target. Chelsea’s N’Golo Kante and Ajax’s Edson Alvarez are also said to be possible options.
Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic have both confirmed plans to leave Manchester when their contracts expire at the end of the month.
James Garner returns to the club this summer after a successful loan spell at Nottingham Forest but ten Hag is yet to make a decision on whether the 21-year-old will be in his immediate plans.
That leaves Scott McTominay and Fred as United’s senior midfield options along with 19-year-old Hannibal Mejbri.
