Nicolas Cage has opened up about how his fifth marriage to Riko Shibata will be his last one, and that the sound of wedding bells will not ‘happen again’.
The veteran actor, 58, has been married to four other women before settling down with his current spouse, Riko, 27, who he married in February 2021.
From 1995 to 2001, he was married to Patricia Arquette; in 2002 he married Lisa Marie Presley for three months; from 2004 to 2016 he was married to Alice Kim; and in March 2019 he married Erika Koike for just four days.
‘I am a romantic, and when I’m in love, I want to give that person everything I can,’ he told GQ.
He added: ‘It’s my expression of saying: “I love you. I want to spend the rest of my life with you.”‘
However, the star was adamant that this final marriage is ‘it for him’.
He said: ‘I mean, it’s not happening again. This is it. This is it.’
Nicolas also revealed that him and Riko have names already picked for their unborn child.
In the interview, he said that if the baby is a girl, the couple want to call it Lennon Augie and if it’s a boy, they’ll name him Akira Francesco.
He explained that the choices of names are sentimental, saying: ‘Augie was my father’s nickname. And my uncle [director Francis Ford Coppola] has decided to change his name to Francesco.’
Nicolas has previously opened up about his nuptials with Riko, telling the Los Angeles Times in January: ‘I’m really happily married. I know five is a lot, but I think I got it right this time.’
At the time of his fifth wedding, one of his reps told People magazine: ‘The date was chosen to honor the birthday of the groom’s late father.
‘The bride wore a handmade Japanese Bridal Kimono from Kyoto that required three layers.’
They added: ‘After the wedding, the happy couple was joined for a small celebration attended by Nicolas’ ex-wife, Alice (who he remains very good friends with) and their son Kal.’
Earlier this month, Nicolas and Riko appeared at the premiere for his forthcoming movie The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent during SXSW, in Austin, Texas.
The movie features Nicolas playing a fictionalised version of himself looking back over his somewhat rocky career, and has been hailed as the actor’s ‘best performance’.
