Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk is ‘brainstorming’ ways to bring back the show’s breakout star HoYeon Jung – despite her character being killed off in season one.

The 27-year-old model rocketed to fame overnight as the Korean drama became Netflix’s most popular-ever original series, which has resulted in 23.7million Instagram followers for the star.

HoYeon played Sae-byeok – aka player number 67 – in the survival drama which follows 456 players in deep financial debt, competing in a number of children’s games to win a grand cash prize.

Feeling like he was ‘left with no choice,’ Hwang confirmed that season two is officially in the works, and according to reports, he’s thinking long and hard about who will return.

Taking into account that most of the main cast met a tragic end, he teased to Deadline: ‘I’ll try something to bring them back [for] season two.’

When asked about HoYeon, he quipped: ‘Let’s say maybe she has a twin sister, you’ll see.’

The actress seemed to be on board with the idea as she cheekily replied: ‘I could change my hair color. Let’s do a little like plastic surgery.’

Following its debut in September 2021, Squid Game reigned supreme during award season.

Lead actor Lee Jung-jae, 49, (Seong Gi-hun – player 456) won the outstanding performance by a male actor in a drama series, while HoYeon triumphed in the outstanding performance by a female actor category.

The show itself was honoured with the award for outstanding action performance by a stunt ensemble in a television series, beating out tough opponents including Cobra Kai and Loki.

While O Yeong-Su, 77, (player 001) became South Korea’s first-ever actor to win a Golden Globe.

The nine-part series was watched by over 111 million viewers worldwide in its first 28 days of release – outdoing Bridgerton, which had 82 million views at the end of 2020.

However fantasy horror Hellbound became the most-watched television series on November 20, just 24 hours after its release, topping the ratings list in over 80 countries.

Squid Game is available to stream on Netflix.
