BBC newsreader Clive Myrie will be returning as a guest host on Have I Got News for You to mark the show’s 63rd season.

Before returning to the UK last week, the 57-year-old journalist was updating viewers on Russia’s tragic invasion alongside the corporation’s chief international correspondent Lyse Doucet, with many watching at home concerned for their safety.

The Mastermind host will be joined by writer Helen Lewis and comedian Andy Hamilton with Ian Hislop and Paul Merton resuming their regular spot as team captains, and according to Myrie, the pair might be in for a little surprise.

‘I’m so excited and really looking forward to a second stint as host of HIGNFY,’ he said.

‘It’s clear that in my absence Merton and Hislop have been running amok. A firm hand is needed to rein the scoundrels in. They’d better be ready!!’

Myrie has appeared on the comedy show four times, but this marks his second time presenting, and viewers will watch him in his element on April 1 on BBC One at 9pm.

Susanna Reid, Piers Morgan and many more commended Myrie’s bravery on the frontline, however he stressed that the war is ‘getting a lot worse,’ during Monday’s edition of The One Show.

‘This is really turning into total warfare, which is something that this continent hasn’t seen since the end of the Second World War,’ he told presenters Alex Jones and Jermaine Jenas.

‘So how do you prepare for that? I’m not sure you ever can!’

Myrie praised the Ukrainians’ strength as he said: ‘That’s the thing that hits you, the sense of resolve and mental strength of the people certainly that I encountered, exhibited.

‘And the idea that they’re facing the second biggest army an army that is intent on retaking this land, it’s really humbling.

‘It’s incredible to see, but it also sadly suggests that this is going to be a bloody fight to the end because they are putting up such stiff resistance,’ he added.

Have I Got News for You returns on Friday April 1 at 9pm on BBC One.
