Succession star Brian Cox has admitted he regrets calling Johnny Depp an ‘overrated actor’ in his memoir, describing it as an ‘easy joke.’

When his book was released in October, Brian seemed to go all Logan Roy on us, branding Johnny ‘so overblown, so overrated.’

However, he’s done a 180, describing his own words as ‘a bit harsh.’

‘You know what it’s like, you go for the easy joke,’ he added to Jimmy Kimmel.

‘And I went for the easy joke. That was what happened, and I sort of regretted it. Because I’m not like that normally; I was just being a bit glib, a bit flip.

Asked by Jimmy if actors generally think they’re overrated Brian went on: ‘I think they do.

‘I think a lot of times actors think they’re overrated, and some think they’re underrated. Let’s put it this way: Most of them think they’re not rated at all.’

In his memoir, Brian had shared his love for the likes of Alan Rickman and Morgan Freeman but revealed he wasn’t too fond of Johnny.

In an excerpt of the tome obtained by The Big Issue, Brian wrote of his fellow actor: ‘Personable though I’m sure he is, is so overblown, so overrated.

‘I mean, Edward Scissorhands. Let’s face it, if you come on with hands like that and pale, scarred-face make-up, you don’t have to do anything. And he didn’t. And subsequently, he’s done even less.’

The actor also revealed he turned down a chance to play the Governor alongside Depp in the Pirates of the Caribbean, with the role played by Jonathan Pryce.

Brian’s best known for his role in Succession, with the series recently winning big at the SAG Awards.
