Gran Turismo 7 off to a slow start in the UK as Elden Ring keeps pole

Gran Turismo 7 has failed to knock Elden Ring off the top spot in the UK digital sales charts, but has comfortably taken second place.

To say FromSoftware’s latest release, Elden Ring, is killing it would be a understatement. It is currently 2022’s best-selling game in the US and, as of March 5, a week since its release, it is still the UK’s best-selling downloaded game, according to the latest Games Sales Data.

PlayStation remains the most popular platform for the game, with 42% of its sales across PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4. 32% of sales were for Xbox, with 26% on PC, as shared by GamesIndustry.biz.

This means Elden Ring is performing better than Gran Turismo 7, despite the latter being a newer, highly anticipated release. Granted, Elden Ring has the advantage of releasing for five platforms, while Gran Turismo 7 is exclusive to PlayStation.

The racing game has still taken a comfortable second place in the charts, with more than half of its sales (57%) being digital. Unsurprisingly, the PlayStation 5 version was more popular with 78% of sales, making it the third biggest PlayStation 5 launch of the year so far, behind Elden Ring and Horizon Forbidden West.

However, it was only the fifth fastest-selling Gran Turismo title overall, in terms of numbered sequels beating only Gran Turismo 3, 6, and the 1998 original, according to additional data from GamesIndustry.biz.

While it won’t affect sales, Gran Turismo 7 could make some extra money for Sony through its microtransactions. These weren’t really advertised prior to its launch, but they are there and borderline obnoxious, making the in-game cars worth upwards of £160.

It’s also been noted that, compared to 2017’s Gran Turismo Sport, digital sales are up by 185%. For as much as some champion the virtues of physical media, there has been a clear rise in interest in digital media, which will only encourage companies like Sony to make physical releases less of a priority.

Other notable and recent releases include GRID: Legends (another racing sim which released only a week before Gran Turismo 7) and Babylon’s Fall, although neither have been able to break into the top 10.

That’s hardly surprising for Babylon’s Fall, which has struggled to find an audience and has received a near universal thrashing from outlets and the public.

There was also Nintendo Switch exclusive Triangle Strategy, but Nintendo doesn’t share digital sales data so there’s no telling how well it’s performed on that front.
