KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Monday allowed PPP leader Sharjeel Memon to travel to the UAE for a festival in Dubai, where he is representing the provincial government as its focal person.

Sharjeel, facing several National Accountability Bureau (NAB) inquires, had approached the SHC for the removal of his name from the federal government’s Exit Control List (ECL). He had filed the petition after being made the focal person by the Sindh government for a shopping festival in Dubai.

When his petition came before a two-member bench, headed by Justice Muhammad Karim Khan Agha, counsel for the federal government and a special public prosecutor for NAB stated that the federal government and the NAB did not have any objection to Sharjeel’s travels.

The bench while allowing Sharjeel’s plea directed him to furnish a surety of Rs1 million with nazir of the court and return to Pakistan before April 1, 2022.

According to a recent statement of the NAB prosecutor made before SHC, close to eight inquiries, investigations and references have been initiated by the anti-corruption watchdog against Sharjeel.

Earlier. Sharjeel’s counsel, Advocate Kanwar Raj informed the court that his client had been assigned the duty of provincial government’s focal person for a festival scheduled to start in the UAE from December 15.

The counsel stated that his client’s name had been placed on ECL, however, with the permission of the court he had travelled abroad a couple of months ago and also returned within the stipulated time.
