Gavan O’Herlihy dead: Happy Days star dies aged 70

Actor Gavan O’Herlihy, known for his roles in Willow and Happy Days, has died at the age of 70.

A rep confirmed news of O’Herlihy’s death to Metro.co.uk.

O’Herlihy’s on-screen career began in 1973, with the actor being cast as Chuck Cunningham in Happy Days 1974.

He was later replaced by Randolph Roberts but is still remembered for the role to this day.

O’Herlihy, the son of actor Dan O’Herlihy, starred in various TV shows throughout the 70s, and was well known for appearing in villainous roles.

In 1983, he played Brad in Superman III, which starred Christopher Reeve as the superhero, in 1983.

A few years later, the actor took on the role of Airk Thaughbaer in Willow, which starred Warwick Davis, and in the early 90s, appeared in Twin Peaks.

After he relocated to the UK in the 1990s, his other TV credits included Coded Hostile, Sharpe, Jonathan Creek, and Midsomer Murders.

His final on-screen credit was in 2009, in cult horror film The Descent Part 2.

Fans have paid tribute to the late actor, with one writing: ‘RIP Gavan O’Herlihy, one heck of a versatile actor.’

‘RIP Gavan O’Herlihy, The lost Cunningham brother from Happy Days, and marvelous character actor in Superman III, Never Say Never Again, and Willow,’ another said.

One more added: ‘Sad to hear that the great Gavan O’Herlihy has passed away at age 70 – I enjoyed his work in Superman 3, Twin Peaks and especially as Airk Thaughbaer in Willow. RIP.’
