Kate Garraway has admitted she is ‘hanging on the hope of a miracle’ while filming a new television programme, as husband Derek Draper’s Covid battle continues.
The Good Morning Britain presenter appears in new BBC Two series Walking With…, which sees her go on a walk through the Cotswolds countryside with a drone as she talks about her relationship with nature and discusses her experiences during lockdown.
Kate also said it was the first time she has been by herself since Derek went into hospital after being diagnosed with coronavirus.
‘I think this is probably the first time – certainly since Derek contracted Covid – when I’ve had a whole day to myself, with no other purpose than taking in the sights and sounds, just the joy of the countryside,’ she said, talking to the camera during the programme.
‘When I was doing a lot of mindfulness and just trying to create some space in my head when it feels like life is quite overwhelming, it’s much easier to do when you’re somewhere like this.’
She added: ‘It’s much easier to hang on to the hope of a miracle isn’t it; a great sense that anything can happen.
‘When I still do feel the crisis and worry about what Derek’s future is, and therefore what our future is, since he contracted Covid, I find that just focusing on one thing helps you to calm your mind down. It’s a chance to stop and be, and let life come to me for a change.’
Kate also spoke about the touching acts of kindness she has experienced over the last year and a half, saying: ‘A lady over the road called Susie – I didn’t know her before lockdown – she turned up one day with a cake. And she’s come with a cake every single week since Derek got sick in March 2020.
‘She arrives and just says, “Here you go. Just something to make you smile.” There are other people just offering to help each other, and that’s a bit from this period which I really hope we can keep going with.’
The 54-year-old went on to reflect on her experiences by saying: ‘I’ve had moments of great loneliness and fear over the last year and a half or so. In that situation, it’s hard because the person I’ve wanted to give me a hug the most is the person that can’t, and that’s Derek.
‘There’s something about coming here and reminding yourself that you can feel the countryside wrapping its arms around you and giving you love back. I feel grateful for today.’
Walking With Kate Garraway airs at 7pm on BBC Two on Wednesday.
