Fans are going wild for a brand new preview of the upcoming Doctor Who episode The Halloween Apocalypse.

Viewers of tonight’s The One Show on BBC One were treated to a short but sweet clip giving a first look at Dan Lewis, the Doctor’s newest companion played by comedian John Bishop.

John is set to join The Doctor and Yaz on the Tardis on this Sunday’s episode, and it’s clear from the clip that his character Dan is a no-nonsense northern grump – almost reminiscent of Christopher Eccleston’s ninth Time Lord.

In the clip, Dan opens the door to a grown man, without a costume and holding a box of eggs, demanding ‘trick or treat’.

‘How old are you?’ an incensed Dan demands. ‘You’re not even dressed up! You’re just going around knocking on people’s doors!’

As the middle-aged trick or treater walks away, Dan shouts after him: ‘Don’t be throwing eggs at my house!’

Despite the trailer giving absolutely nothing away, Doctor Who fans have been going crazy for the clip, with some going into meltdown over Dan’s grumpy demeanor.

‘I LOVE DAN ALREADY AHAHAHAHAHAHA’, one Whovian wrote, while another agreed – but in a less excited tone – ‘Okay …I’m going to love Dan Lewis.’

‘John Bishop is literally just playing himself and I love it’, another said, a sentiment echoed throughout much of the online discourse as a fourth joked: ‘That’s not even Dan, that’s just John Bishop shouting at a man for being a dumbass’.

While fans were already making memes from the 40-second clip shown on The One Show, they were given an even bigger surprise from the official Doctor Who Twitter account, which shared the scene in full.

The full clip shows a much softer side to Dan as he hands out sweets to age-appropriate trick or treaters before telling them to get home safe.

Seconds later, the man holding the eggs knocks on his door.

Elsewhere on The One Show, John revealed how his audition for the role of Dan in Doctor Who was not exactly traditional.

As the audition took place during lockdown, John explained he had to audition over Zoom on his mobile phone, which he had stuck to the wall with blu-tack.

‘But because I’m not a trained actor I couldn’t learn the lines’, he admitted, and revealed he had the script stuck on the wall alongside his phone, and ‘whenever I was thinking of a line I looked mysteriously away so I could read it’.

Fans will be able to see John’s debut on the Tardis this Halloween night, Sunday October 31.

The One Show airs weekdays from 7pm on BBC One and Doctor Who returns on Sunday at 6.25pm on BBC One.
