The idea that Tom Holland is playing a young Nathan Drake already seems to be out the window, as the movie recreates scenes from the later games.
Apart from Sony, very few people ever seem to have though that an Uncharted movie makes much sense, including the six (!) directors that dropped out of the production before it settled on Ruben Fleischer, maker of Zombieland and Venom.
The movie is finally almost finished though and due out early next year, with a trailer to be released imminently. Which we know because part of it has already leaked online.
It shows two sequences, one of which is a recreation of the cargo plane scene from Uncharted 3 (which itself was a brazen knock-off of a scene from James Bond film The Living Daylights) and another sequence with a Scottish character that, together with production stills and comments from the director, implies the film will also feature elements from Uncharted 4.
On account of almost all of them being awful, it’s very rare to see a movie recreate an actual scene from a video game, rather than just more general elements and characters, but the most obvious difference here is that Tom Holland as Nathan Drake looks about 12 years old, whereas Nate in the games, especially by the time of Uncharted 4, is on the older side for a video game hero.
At first it was assumed that Holland would be playing Drake in his younger days, which has been in the games before, but the trailer shows that not to be the case. Although it is possible that an even younger actor will be playing the character in flashback.
We’re not sure if that’s Sophia Taylor Ali as Chloe Frazer, but you can definitely see a brief glimpse of Mark Wahlberg as Sully. Antonio Banderas is also in the film as an unnamed character, which probably means he’s the bad guy.
Although there have been vague rumours of a new game, from both original creators Naughty Dog and others, nothing has ever been confirmed and it’s unlikely one will appear anytime soon.
If the movie is already using scenes from the later games it’s going to run out of set pieces to copy pretty quickly.
If the film is somehow a massive hit then no doubt a new game will be fast-tracked but we’ll have to wait and see on that. The official release of the trailer comes first though, which is expected later today.
