The creator of Netflix’s hugely popular series Squid Game has waded into the dubbing row surrounding the show, after fans questioned whether or not to watch with subtitles.

The series, which was number one on Netflix across the world for weeks, tells the story of a group of people in debt who are given the chance to win the equivalent of £27million but only if they risk their lives by playing a series of childhood games and risk instant death.

Since then, there’s been a lot of discussion online regarding the choice of subtitles, and whether fans should be watching the show in the original Korean or English audio.

Now, creator of the show Hwang Dong-hyuk has become involved in the discussion – and he’s got a pretty clear idea on what viewers should be doing.

When asked by Good Morning America, he said he thought fans should go for the subtitled version.

‘Please watch the subtitled one,’ he said. ‘If you don’t see the acting, the performance from the real actor, then you are not seeing anything. You are missing the most of the Squid Game fun.’

So there you have it. Fans, you know what to do.

In less than a month after its release, Squid Game has become the most successful show on Netflix, and is now worth almost $1billion £654million) after 111 million people watched the bloodbath in just 28 days.

Netflix Asia executive Kim Min-young recently revealed that Netflix initially gave the show a different name, fearing international audiences wouldn’t understand the reference to a real children’s game popular in Korea.

‘Initially, we knew we wanted this show to travel but we were worried the title Squid Game wouldn’t resonate because not many people would get it,’ she told Hollywood Reporter.

‘We went with the title Round Six instead, wanting it to be more general and helpful for telling people what the show is about – there are six rounds to the game.’

Squid Game is available to stream on Netflix.
