Taut crime thriller The Guilty, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and a whole host of famous voices, is receiving its wide release on streaming this week.

Described as a ‘note-for-note adaptation’ of Gustav Möller’s 2018 Danish drama by The Washington Post, The Guilty sees Gyllenhaal dominate screen time as a 911 operator dealing with an unusual call.

Helmed by Antoine Fuqua, known for The Equalizer and previous collaboration with Gyllenhaal, 2015’s Southpaw, the director was forced to work from a van with screens giving him access to cameras for the entire film after testing positive for Covid-19.

What is The Guilty about?

The Guilty follows troubled police detective Joe Baylor (Gyllenhaal), demoted to 911 operator duty, as he scrambles to save a distressed kidnapped caller during a harrowing day of revelations and reckonings.

However, all is not as it seems, and the LAPD officer also must contend with his past, poor health, failing relationship and the raging California wildfires, which are creating chaos and draining resources.

Adapted from the Danish original, the trailer shows the pressure Baylor is under in trying to establish the facts of the case with limited time, information and back-up.

Who is in The Guilty cast?

The Guilty sees 40-year-old Gyllenhaal take on the lion’s share of screentime in what is practically a one-man show focusing on his character’s handling of a highly stressful situation that he can only hear over the operating line.

Famous voices in the cast include Zola’s Riley Keough as Emily Lighton, An Education’s Peter Sarsgaard, Gyllenhaal’s real-life brother-in-law, as Henry Fisher, Emily’s ex-husband, and Oscar nominee Ethan Hawke as Sergeant Bill Miller.
