Piers Morgan has shared his verdict on Dan Walker’s first dance on Strictly Come Dancing 2021, revealing he was ‘disappointed’ that the newsreader was actually good.
The broadcaster, 56, has had a long-standing pseudo-rivalry with his fellow presenter Dan, 44, so of course he was tuning in to Strictly to see whether he would embarrass himself or not.
Following Dan’s first dance with his professional partner Nadiya Bychkova, chief critic Piers took to Twitter to share his verdict.
He tweeted: ‘Very disappointing dance by @mrdanwalker – I was hoping he’d be a lot worse than that… #Strictly.’
Piers wasn’t the only one pleasantly surprised by the dance, as the judges were too, awarding Dan a score of 24 out of a possible 40.
New judge Anton du Beke told him: ‘I have to be honest with you, I was a bit nervous about this.
‘I thought you were going to be awful, but you were terrific.’
Dan had dedicated his dance to presenter Louise Minchin, who recently left BBC Breakfast after almost 20 years, earlier this month.
Speaking directly to his former co-star after surprising the judges with his Quickstep to Everybody Needs Somebody to Love, Dan said: ‘We miss you, we love you.’
Before taking to the dancefloor, Dan had revealed a very sweet card from Nadiya’s daughter wishing him luck fo this first night.
Sharing a photo of it, Dan wrote: ‘Thank you for all the kind message and best wishes for #Strictly tonight. I’m sorry I can’t respond to them all.
‘I got this gorgeous card from @nadiyabychkova’s beautiful daughter. Thank you Mila. I’ll do my best for you.’
Strictly Come Dancing airs on Saturdays from 7pm on BBC One.
