The workshop section at the 43rd Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF) has been abuzz with activity, captivating children day after day with engaging sessions that combine creativity, sustainability, and science. A standout among these was the “Illuminated Flower Garden” workshop, which invited children aged 10 and above to transform everyday waste materials into stunning works of art.
“I designed this workshop around the theme of sustainability, teaching children how to recycle common items like paper bags and simple materials to craft a garden,” explained Samah, a Syrian national with over a decade of experience working with children. “We added LED battery-operated lights to bring their creations to life.”
A Golden Visa recipient in the creative arts category, Samah regularly conducts workshops for children through government institutions and ministries and also works with adults. At SIBF, she provided young participants with materials such as polystyrene foam, paper bags, plastic straws, and a variety of stationery, inspiring them to create intricate designs.
The children, engrossed in their projects, spoke only to seek guidance from the instructor. They used colourful paper to craft flowers, huts, trees, and birds, which were mounted on foam bases with skewers, toothpicks, and straws. Green confetti simulated grass, while LED lights added a magical glow to their handmade gardens.
Proud of their artistic achievements, many children carried their creations home as heartfelt gifts. “I made this for my mum. She loves gardening. Maybe we can place it in our balcony garden next to the fountain,” said Ananya K., her face glowing with pride.
