Jack Wilshere has rated Arsenal’s decision to sign Fabio Vieira in a 40m euros (£34.2m) deal from Porto.

The Gunners made swift progress on a deal to sign Vieira earlier this week, with the Portuguese midfielder set to undergo his medical on Friday.

Vieira provided 14 assists in Primeira Liga last season – more than any other player – and has been capped 21 times by Portugal Under-21s, voted player of the tournament at last year’s European U21 Championship.

The 22-year-old will become Arsenal’s third summer signing following American goalkeeper Matt Turner and Brazilian forward Marquinhos.

Mikel Arteta was keen to sign a midfielder this summer after watching his side struggle in the aftermath of Thomas Partey’s injury blow last season.

For most of the season Arteta’s side looked on course for a top-four finish but they fell away towards the end of the campaign to finish fifth, two points behind north London rivals Tottenham.

Asked about Arsenal’s move for Vieira, Wilshere said on talkSPORT: ‘I will be honest, I haven’t heard too much about him but I looked him up on YouTube when I saw the news break.

‘He looks good. Everyone looks good on YouTube but he looks like he has got a bit about him. Six goals and 14 assists from midfield. That’s impressive.

‘We all knew that Arsenal had to make some signings because they are in Europe. They need to get a bigger squad, so they are making moves, which is nice.’

As well as signing a midfielder, Arteta will look to bring in a new striker this summer following the recent departures of Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Arsenal are in contact with Manchester City over a deal for Brazilian forward Gabriel Jesus but face competition from Premier League rivals Tottenham and Chelsea.
