Manchester United have not given up hope of signing Frenkie de Jong with Erik ten Hag putting pressure on the club to sign both him and Christian Eriksen.
De Jong remains ten Hag’s top transfer target this summer but United are refusing to be held to ransom by Barcelona over a fee.
United have reportedly seen an opening £52million offer rejected while Barcelona’s vice-president has played down suggestions the Catalan giants are under pressure to sell for financial reasons this summer.
SPORT report however that United have not thrown in the towel and are still determined to bring the Netherlands international to Old Trafford this summer.
Ten Hag is said to be putting pressure on United to agree a deal with Barcelona, with his former Ajax player his ‘absolute priority’.
United have also offered a contract to Christian Eriksen in recent days, with the Brentford midfielder set to become a free agent when his current deal expires at the end of the month.
While some reports have suggested United view Eriksen as an alternative option to de Jong, SPORT claim ten Hag is eager to sign both players as part of his rebuild this summer.
Barça have reportedly told United they are after a package worth €100million. United however are not willing to pay more than €80m in total.
De Jong himself meanwhile has admitted he is flattered to be linked with a move to Manchester but was unable to offer an update on his future this week.
Speaking after an excellent display in his nation’s dramatic win over Wales on Tuesday night in Rotterdam, De Jong said of United’s approach: ‘You’re always flattered when teams show interest in you as a player.
‘But, as you say, I am at the biggest club in the world at the moment and I feel fine there, so no news.’
