Manchester United are ready to beat Tottenham to the signing of Villarreal defender Pau Torres by paying the club’s £42.6m asking price for the Spaniard.

The defender is believed to have a release clause in his contract that would allow him to leave for a fee in the region of £42.6m.

The Spain international was of interest to both United and Tottenham last summer, having impressed on Villarreal’s run to becoming Europa League winners. Earlier this season, Torres confirmed he rejected a move to north London.

‘This summer my representative called me and told me that there was an important offer from Tottenham, more than what I earn now,’ said Torres.

‘But since I play in my town’s team, which few players do, I decided to stay where I’m happy.’

However, he opted to stay with his hometown club and his decision was vindicated by the club’s sensational run to the Champions League semi-finals.

But Torres is now open to moving on and La Razon claim United are prepared to pay the £42.6m asking price that is required to buy him.

Erik ten Hag is desperate to sign a centre-back, with the club expected to offload Eric Bailly and Phil Jones.

Harry Maguire endured a torrid season but is expected to be retained, while Raphael Varane’s debut campaign was interrupted by injury.
