Manchester United and Liverpool have been alerted to the chance of signing Mason Mount because the playmaker has been waiting ‘months’ to open contract talks with Chelsea.

The 23-year-old scored 14 goals and provided 16 assists last season, in what was his most productive campaign to date for the Blues.

The homegrown midfielder is keen to stay at Stamford Bridge but his representatives have been surprised by the club’s lack of urgency in tying him down to a new deal.

From the club’s point of view, there is no urgent need for talks as Mount’s current deal runs until 2024.

But Fabrizio Romano says Mount has been waiting ‘months’ to start negotiations and that’s alerted the likes of United and Liverpool.

The sanctions placed on Roman Abramovich following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine prohibited Chelsea from holding contract talks with players but the club are expected to speed things up now that Todd Boehly’s consortium have completed their takeover.

Mount currently earns around £80,000-a-week at Stamford Bridge and he can expect a significant increase on that if he signs a new deal.

Chelsea would be loathed to lose one of their homegrown stars to a Premier League rival but United and Liverpool have already made discreet enquiries to ascertain Mount’s position on leaving the club.
