Gogglebox star Pete Sandiford has imagined what he would do if his baby son Jimmy needed a kidney transplant, saying he would put himself forward as a donor if he could.
On tonight’s episode of the Channel 4 series, the cast watched scenes from the BBC Two programme Hospital: Road To Recovery.
They were introduced to a woman who two years after the first Covid-19 pandemic, was in need of a kidney transplant, having been born with a kidney disease before discovering she only had one kidney.
At 17 years old, she received a kidney transplant from her father, after learning that both of her parents were a match.
However, now 39, the deterioration of her father’s kidney meant that she needed to have another transplant, with her mother travelling from Amsterdam to donate her kidney.
Speaking about the mother’s incredible gesture, Gogglebox star Helena Worthington said: ‘You would, wouldn’t you. If it’s one of your babies, you’d give them anything.’
‘I’d do the same for Jimmy,’ said Pete, having introduced his son on the show in September 2021, who he shares with his wife Paige Yeomans.
On the programme, ahead of the kidney transplant procedure, the mother said: ‘You can live with one kidney very well, so that’s my decision to do it. She didn’t ask but I give out of my heart. I do this because it’s your daughter.’
Jenny Newby burst into tears while watching with Lee Riley, as they were informed that the operation was a success.
Several Gogglebox viewers shared how moved they were by the scenes, with one tweeting: ‘The Mum giving her daughter her kidney. Blimey, there’s me crying thinking what a wonderful thing that is.’
‘The woman that’s just given her daughter a kidney on #Gogglebox crying!’ someone said, while another added: ‘I’m not a parent but I can’t imagine any parent refusing their kid a kidney.’
In November 2021, Pete marked his six-month anniversary with his wife Paige, sharing a picture on Instagram from their wedding as he wrote in the caption: ‘Happy 6 month wedding anniversary to my best mate, wife and the best mummy in the world.’
Earlier that month, he shared a hilarious picture of their son on Instagram, with the photo showing Pete beaming at the camera as the baby grimaced.
‘Jimmy wishing his daddy a happy birthday,’ the reality star joked.
Gogglebox returns next Friday at 9pm on Channel 4 and is available to watch on All 4.
