An Avril Lavigne biopic is something fans of the Sk8er Boi hitmaker are no doubt desperate for, and the woman herself has revealed who she thinks should play her were one to ever be made.
The singer, 37, reckons that Kristen Stewart would be the best choice to play her on-screen and, we have to say, it’s a great shout.
Appearing at the glitzy iHeartRadio Music Awards earlier this week, Avril was asked on the red carpet who she’d want to play her in a movie about her life.
After a moment’s pause, she gladly replied: ‘I’m trying to think…. Like Kristen Stewart would be cool to play me in a film.
‘She’s dope, yeah!’
Kristen, 31, is an inspired choice to portray the Canadian singer-songwriter for more than one reason – not only does she have a punky, rocky energy herself, but she has a commendable ability to transform for a role, as evidenced in last year’s critically acclaimed film Spencer.
Kristen is currently nominated for the best actress Oscar for her role as Princess Diana in the biopic and has received widespread acclaim for her portrayal of the late, troubled royal.
She’s also played another music legend on screen – Joan Jett in 2010’s The Runaways.
Of course, playing Complicated singer and early Noughties pop-punk icon would be a wildly different undertaking to Diana, but if anyone can nail it, it’s Kristen, who has the range to play a beleaguered vampire’s love interest in the Twilight films, Snow White in Snow White in the Huntsman and a woman who can see ghosts struggling to deal with her brother’s death in Personal Shopper.
While there is no word yet on a biopic about Avril (it’s only a matter of time), she has revealed that her hit 2002 song Sk8er Boi is being turned into a film.
Sharing the joyous news on the She Is The Voice podcast on iHeart Radio in December, she explained: ‘A lot of people have been asking me to play this song on TV shows, it keeps getting brought back up.
‘And I’m actually going to turn this song into a film! And just take it to the next level.’
Admitting Sk8er Boi is still one of her ‘favourite songs to play live’, Avril explained her inspiration behind the anthem.
‘In high school you have all these groups and cliques… it’s a missed opportunity at love,’ she said.
‘The skater boy is in love with the preppy girl and she’s too cool for him… down the road she wishes she had followed her heart and not society’s expectations.’
Avril is firmly back in our lives after releasing her seventh album Love Sux last month, 20 years after bursting onto the music scene with her debut hit Complicated, with the album hitting a well-deserved number three in the UK charts.
