The Wednesday Inbox wonders when there’ll be a news update from Xbox, as one reader looks forward to Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga.

Deal changer
RE: AgentCole1981. Yes, I feel the same. The PlayStation 5 controller does feel slightly bigger and less ergonomic than the PlayStation 4. My hand did ache after a while playing Astro Bot. I wasn’t that keen on the adaptive triggers either, I realise how clever they are but for long term play they’re quite uncomfortable.

After having all the previous PlayStations and seeing the very different business models (Microsoft buying Bethesda helped) I thought I would give the Xbox Series X a go on Xbox All Access for £28.99 a month for two years and sold my PlayStation 5 (to my brother before you ask, for normal retail price).

Had it for 10 months now and been quite impressed with Game Pass; the controller, which is very comfy; and most of all my wife doesn’t pull a face whenever she looks under the TV like she did with the PlayStation 5. All the best and thanks for the great gaming coverage over the years.

Move the dial
I’m not getting the feeling that today’s State Of Play is not going to be a little short on megatons. Game Pass doesn’t seem like something you just tease at the end, like a game, so all we’re going to get is third party Japanese games. Probably most of them we already know about too, and I can’t say I’m really excited about Forspoken or Ghostwire: Tokyo.

I hope they pull something exciting out of the bag as I have to agree with the reader who said that Horizon Forbidden West and Gran Turismo 7 haven’t really moved the dial at all, despite apparently being very good (neither interests me).

God Of War Ragnarök does but I’m already disappointed that in terms of the graphics it doesn’t seem to be much of an improvement at all. It’s the story that’s most important with that one but I kind of feel this generation is becoming stalled too, with Microsoft not doing anything either and I’m not sure they’ll even have anything major all year.

Unknown State
So Sony has as State of Play due today, even if it sounds like it’ll be a relatively minor one. As an Xbox Series X owner what I’m more interested in is when Microsoft is going to have some announcements. Ones that aren’t some press release about how they’ve spent the GDP of Denmark to buy some overrated publisher who hasn’t made a game I enjoy in over a decade.

If you can guess I’m not very impressed with Microsoft’s spending spree recently and wish they would just get on and announce some games. Fable was rumoured for years before it was announced and yet we still haven’t seen so much as a screenshot for it. Forza Motorsport was announced once and then never mentioned again.

I worry that Microsoft are not overseeing their developers as well as they need to and that work is progressing too slowly, even given the pandemic. For example, why did The Initiative need to have Crystal Dynamics come in and help them with the new Perfect Dark? They’re a brand new studio with tons of veteran developers in them and they’ve tripped up on their first game?

Xbox Game Pass is great but I think I was probably better off just sticking with the Xbox One and buying the Xbox Series X/S next year for all the difference it would’ve made.

Chat show
Does a God Of War TV show really make any sense to anyone? The Rock’s never going to play Kratos, so how are you going to get someone that looks and sounds like him but can act. And what is Kratos going to do in the quitter moments? He’s not exactly a chatterbox and has zero emotional range, which is the whole point of him.

I would’ve thought if you were going to do it then a movie would make much more sense, because then you’d have more money for the effects and you can be all action, without having to turn Kratos into a sitcom star.

The fun knight
In Tuesday’s Inbox Coast asked about Gotham Knights: ‘Why be all these characters when you could be Batman instead?’ Well my answer to that is I’m personally really looking forward to a Gotham set game where I’m not Batman!

I’ve played and enjoyed the Arkham games (apart from the overuse of the Batmobile in Arkham Knight -those stealth tank sections, ugh!) but what I don’t enjoy about them is Batman himself! He’s just too brooding for me!

I’ve been reading the current run of the Nightwing comics (which also heavily features Batgirl/Oracle) and I’m totally in love with Dick and Babs! So I can’t wait to step into the boots of heroes who are just as courageous and noble as Batman but are also way more fun to hang out with!

Au revoir Elden Ring
I’m a long time Soulsborne fan. I have platinumed them all since Demon’s Souls PlayStation 3. I adore them.

But I have had to give up on Elden Ring for now.

Not because of gameplay difficulty though. It’s the difficulty in reading the text!

Why have they made the text so infuriatingly tiny? I have to squint to read the inventory and item descriptions and this impacts gameplay, which is otherwise fine.

There are a load of threads about this online and it’s the worst in Soulsborne history before anyone says ‘git glasses’.

Since I’m whinging I have two other complaints. Pop-in is absolutely awful still on PlayStation 5.

Even worse, there is no shortcut button when you pick up a new item like in other games. You have to scroll through the whole massive inventory with its tiny text and icons to find out what your new item does.
Patch it Fromsoft and I’ll be back.

GC: Yeah, that last one is pretty annoying.

Going out with bang
Yay for Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, it looks like tons of fun! If Warner is going to lose the licence then I hope this at least allows them to go out in style. It looks really good, with an insane amount of content, and hopefully the long development time means not too many bugs.

Although they did make too many in the end I’ve missed these games as they were initially one of the few my partner would put up with and actually join in with. She likes more games now but the Lego ones are still a favourite in our house.

Nothing to say
I’m getting a bad feeling about what Rockstar is, or rather isn’t, doing with the next gen versions of GTA 5. They’ve been going on about it for years, they’ve delayed it once already, and yet it doesn’t seem to be anything but a basic remaster with bog standard graphics options and an updated menu, unless I’m missing something?

It seems increasingly likely that the lack of details is because there are no details, although that still doesn’t explain why there’s no proper trailer yet. Other than Rockstar expect everyone to just buy it anyway, which I’m sure they will.

Not me though. Even at half price it’s still far too much and if it hasn’t changed at all I had my fill of both the story mode and online years again. I also don’t want to do anything to encourage Rockstar treading water with the game. Just make a new one, for goodness sake!

If you’re worried about losing a steady stream of revenue, which I get, then just release a standalone single-player game. Is that really too much to ask? Do they think that wouldn’t make money? I really don’t get it.

Inbox also-rans
Ahead of the closure of the Nintendo eShop, can you say how well (if at all) Metroid: Samus Returns works on the Wii U? I don’t have a 3DS, but I do have a Wii U, and it’s the only 2D Metroid I haven’t got.
David

GC: It’s a great game but you can’t play it on Wii U, it’s only available on 3DS.

Beat Elden Ring in under three hours? No deaths? I am unable to process that level of games-playing, it literally seems impossible!

This week’s Hot Topic
The subject for this weekend’s Inbox was suggested by reader Scooter, who asks what is your favourite video game universe?

Many video game franchises have been going for decades now and have crafted their own unique worlds and backstories but which do you most enjoy coming back to? It doesn’t have to be a game with any sequels, but which fictional world, or worlds, do you have the most fun in?

How much does the backstory and lore matter to you and what else would you like to see done in the same universe, in terms of new games and spin-offs?
