Our House kicked off in dramatic style on ITV this evening, and Martin Compston has spoken out on the show’s cliffhanger which marks the beginning of his character Bram’s downfall…

The highly-anticipated ITV thriller aired the first of four tense episodes on Monday night, with family man Bram Lawson’s (Martin Compston) secrets and lies quickly beginning to unravel.

After his wife, Fi Lawson (Tuppence Middleton) arrived home to complete strangers moving into her house – and all her stuff gone – she eventually realises her estranged husband had gone missing, leaving her to pick up the pieces.

This evening’s opener aired the mistakes that started it all off after Bram was discovered having sex with neighbour Merle (Weruche Opia).

He then caused a potentially fatal car crash in a moment of madness, with viewers not sure what he’ll decide to face up to his actions.

But chatting to Metro.co.uk before the episode, Martin opened up on how big the episode one cliffhanger is for his character.

He told us: ‘I mean, definitely. It’s the sort of deciding moment for him, it’s such a huge moment.

‘When it starts at the beginning of the episode, you think there are so many moments where he should do the right thing and he kind of wants to do the right thing but the things he has done are pretty despicable.

‘It’s a tightrope you have to walk because kinda needs to be on his side but he’s done some horrible things. So it’s trying to make them sort of charming or a likeable guy.

‘He’s done these things and it’s more just a guy in a bad situation rather than the guy who goes bad things.’

Predictably, things are set to go from bad to worse for the character, as the story unfolds.

While we got a hint of a very level-headed Bram at the beginning of episode one, his darker side and secrets he’d been hiding from Fi soon came to the surface.

Martin continued: ‘He just ups the ante every episode. He’s on a sort of downward depressive spiral from page seven for the rest of the series!

‘He just gets himself into bigger and bigger trouble but that’s good TV! You’re kind of screaming at him to just stop.

‘But I think TV can be annoying and frustrating because that’s what draws you in. He was a guy full of contradictions, which is always fun to play.

‘As definitely the series unfolds. There are some really dark moments for him,’ he added.

Martin went on to note how despite ad breaks sometimes acting as a hindrance to tension, the show uses them in its favour through ‘mini cliffhangers.’

He commented: ‘When you’ve got something on ITV you’ve got to be really clever because especially when you’ve got the ad breaks in, sometimes it can break momentum but the best shows on ITV use that to their advantage.

‘We have these massive cliffhangers but we also have these mini cliffhangers throughout.’

Weruche stars as Merle, with Martin saying one scene with her character left his ‘jaw on the floor’ (Picture: ITV)

He went on to tease an upcoming scene that left his ‘jaw on the floor’ from Tuppence and Weruche’s characters.

‘There’s one particular one with Weruche’s character, and I kind of… you just leave the story and because you don’t go back to do the ADR or watch the show for months, so you forget a little bit and there’s just something her character does and I completely forgot about it and my jaw was on the floor.

‘It’s literally just Tuppence opens the door to Weruche. All those little moments keep people talking, keep people guessing. Yeah, there’s plenty of twists and turns in it, which is always exciting!’ Martin shared.

As fans await episode two, will Bram decide to do the right thing and help the casualties, or turn his back on the situation?

You’ll just have to wait and see.

Our House continues tomorrow at 9pm on ITV.
