It’s time to play the music – Disney+ is bringing The Muppets back to TV screens.

The streaming giant has announced plans for a new 10-part comedy called The Muppets Mayhem, featuring comedian Lilly Singh alongside Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem.

The show will follow the group – made up of beloved characters Animal, Sgt. Floyd Pepper, Janice, Zoot, Lips and band leader Dr. Teeth – as they finally record their first ever album.

Singh will be the human lead as junior A&R executive Nora, who has the difficult task of managing the group 47 years after their debut in a Muppet Show pilot in 1975.

The series – set to start filming in April – sees the band try and go platinum in the modern music scene.

In a tweet, the band said: ‘Can you picture THIS? Get ready for #TheMuppetsMayhem, an all-new Original series that am, is, and shall henceforth be starring we — Dr. Teeth and The Electric Mayhem! Rock out with us, and our very groovy pal [Lilly Singh], on @DisneyPlus, baby.’

The Goldbergs creator Adam F. Goldberg has developed the series alongside Jeff Yrokes and Bill Barretta based on Jim Henson’s legendary creations, and the trio will also serve as writers.

Barretta is best known as the puppeteer and voices of Rowlf the Dog, Dr. Teeth, the Swedish Chef, Pepe the King Prawn, Bobo the Bear and more, as he inherited a lot of the roles following Jim’s death in 1990.

David Lightbody – senior VP at Disney Live Entertainment and The Muppets Studios – said in a statement: ‘We are so excited to bring the story of The Electric Mayhem Band to the front and center of this new series.

‘They’ve been entertaining audiences since The Muppet Show, which debuted 45 years ago, so it’s wonderful that these characters are finally getting to play lead rather than supporting roles.’

The Muppets Mayhem follows Disney+’s Muppets Haunted Mansion special last year, while it’s the second attempt at an ongoing Muppets series following ditched project Muppets Live Another Day.

Ayo Davis – Disney Branded Television president – added: ‘The Muppets are renowned for quality, creativity and unrivaled, fun storytelling for the whole family.

‘We are thrilled to have Adam, Bill and Jeff at the helm to bring all of these iconic and great new characters to life in fresh and dynamic ways.’

The Muppets Mayhem is coming to Disney+.
