Peaky Blinders favourite Tom Hardy will make a dramatic return in scenes to come, but it wasn’t always on the cards for him to come back for the finale.

Peaky Blinders returned last weekend after more than two years away from screens, with the explosive opener fans had been waiting for, ever since.

However, one person who was missing was Tom Hardy’s character Alfie Solomons, who had an important role to play in the season five finale.

But, with it confirmed he will definitely be back at some point in this series., show creator Steven Knight previously revealed to Metro.co.uk that Tom Hardy had input on the decision for the character to return.

Asked whether the plan was ‘always’ for Solomons to return in the final season, he told us: ‘The plan changed, let me put it that way – because Tom does love this character.’

It was thought Alfie was dead after being shot by Tommy in season four, following multiple betrayals from the Jewish gang leader.

But this was all proved to be false when Tommy went to visit him in Margate at the end of season five, the exact place he launched the bullet in the previous season.

Alfie was confirmed to still be alive, but his face was left badly disfigured due to the injuries he suffered.

Hardy’s character was shown in the recent trailer, as well as being spotted in a couple of newly released pictures.

Last weekend saw a reference made to the ‘Solomons family’ which is thought to prove Tommy is back on good terms with Alfie as he desperately looks for allies this season.

The show’s creator also touched on how the difficulties of filming amid the Covid pandemic

‘I mean, the main thing is, I mean, we lost a year really, pretty much about exactly and what it does, which anybody who makes a show like this knows, it’s absolutely a juggling act of getting availability of different actors.

‘So as soon as you lose a year, all the availabilities change, so you then have to know who’s available with who and it becomes a real conundrum. But there’s always a way to do it, and you can adjust the script to take care of that.

‘But the actual shooting itself obviously was affected by the bubble and everybody has to stay locked down. But in the end, I think what it possibly does is makes the production team isolated and closer.

He explained how that affected the atmosphere of this series on-screen too, sharing: ‘I think somehow, the mood of this series… you can really feel that intensity.’

Peaky Blinders continues tonight at 9pm on BBC One.
