ISLAMABAD: President Dr Arif Alvi on Tuesday warned that India was pursuing the dangerous policy of promoting Islamophobia that would destroy the country one day for sure.
India would lead itself to destruction by promoting hatred for Muslims, said President Alvi on Twitter.
“India is taking a big risk. With this Islamophobic hatred, India will destroy itself for sure.”
“I hope and pray that sensible elements of Indian society will stop it,” he added.
The president also quoted Czech writer Milan Kundera that said, ‘The first step in liquidating a people is to erase its memory. Destroy its books, its culture, destroy its history. Then have somebody write new books, manufacture a new culture, invent a new history.”
“Before long that nation will begin to forget what it is and what it was… The struggle of man against power is the struggle of memory against forgetting,” President Avli wrote in his tweet while referring to Kundera.
Attacks on Muslims are frequent in India that critics say has been inflamed under Narendra Modi.
According to a report by Al-Jazeera, in 2020, the US Commission on International Religious Freedom listed India as a “country of particular concern” for the first time since 2004, and the listing continued in 2021.
In the latest incident of religious violence in India, Hindu hardliners recently set fire to the home of a former Indian foreign minister Salman Khurshid for comparing Hindu nationalism to “extremist groups” such as ISIL (ISIS) in his book.
