Britney Spears has taken to her Instagram to reflect on her new life and those who helped her gain it, after a judge terminated her controversial conservatorship on Friday after 13 years.
The Circus singer, 39, saw her father, Jamie Spears, suspended from his role as her conservator, managing her wellbeing and financial affairs, in September, but this most recent ruling sees Britney able to start regaining control of all aspects of her life as official measures are taken to end the complex legal arrangement she has been under since she was 27.
The chart-topper posted next to a picture of a lipstick: ‘What an amazing weekend … I felt like I was on cloud 9 the whole time ☁️ !!! I actually got my first glass of champagne 🥂 at the most beautiful restaurant I’ve ever seen last night !!!! I’m celebrating my freedom and my B day for the next two months !!!!!!!!!!! I mean after 13 years … I think I’ve waited long ENOUGH !!!!
She added: ‘I’m so happy my lawyer Mathew Rosengart came into my life when he did … he has truly turned my life around … I’m forever thankful for that !!!!’
Never one to forget her fans, or the power of the #FreeBritney movement, Britney also wrote: ‘What a sight seeing so many people celebrating my victory …. I love my fans so much … so thank you 🌹 !!!!’
Joking over her recent spate of posts in the same green top, the singer said she had got ‘really excited’ over the shirt.
‘The only person I’ve ever seen wear shoulder pads is @HaileyBieber. She was me for Halloween … I think I won brownie points with my kids 🤭😂 !!!! But seriously though … how freaking cool is that ???? Okay so I posted four times in one day in the same shirt 👚 …. I liked the way it made me feel and I never knew shoulder pads were extremely flattering !!!!’
On Friday, the star had shared footage of her supporters outside the courthouse waving banners and celebrating with confetti canons as the news came through.
She tweeted: ‘Good God I love my fans so much it’s crazy!!! I think I’m gonna cry the rest of the day !!!! Best day ever … praise the Lord … can I get an Amen???? #FreedBritney.’
Britney added on Instagram: ‘I can’t freaking believe it !!!! Again … best day ever !!!!’
The star’s fiance Sam Asghari shared an image on Instagram of the word ‘Freedom.’
He wrote in the caption: ‘History was made today. Britney is Free! ❤️’.
The historic decision comes after the iconic singer spent the past few years fighting to change the court-appointed conservatorship, which was put in place in 2008 following her mental health breakdown.
In June, she delivered a bombshell court testimony in which she labelled the arrangement ‘abusive’ and revealed that she ‘cried every day’.
She also alleged that she had been blocked from having another child by being made to keep an IUD in her body, and was not even allowed to be driven in a car by her fiancé Sam Asghari.
The conservatorship of Britney’s estate and of her person have both been terminated with some minor exceptions.
Judge Brenda Penny ended the conservatorship at Los Angeles County Superior Court after listening to 30 minutes of testimony, without requiring any further mental evaluation.
She specified that an accountant serving as a temporary conservator should retain some powers – but the legal arrangement is ‘effective today… thereby terminated’.
Speaking after the monumental hearing, Britney’s lawyer Mathew Rosengart said: ‘What’s next for Britney, and this is the first time this could be said for about a decade, is up to one person: Britney.’
He added: ‘I’m so proud of her. I thank her for her courage and poise and power. She helped shine a light on conservatorships and guardianships from coast to coast.’
