LAHORE: Three female students won 15 gold medals while one male student won four gold medals at the 27th convocation of the University of Engineering and Technology (UET) Lahore. Sadaf Munir won six gold medals and Ayesha Khalid won five gold medals. Similarly, Arshma Hasnain and Hamza Siddique won four gold medals.
Degrees were awarded to 2,929 students at the convocation which include 2,246 graduates, 651 MS/MPhil and 32 PhD degrees. Sixty-one gold medals were also awarded among students. Besides the UET’s main campus in Lahore, the degrees were also awarded at the sub-campuses.
A total of 2,021 degrees were distributed at UET Lahore main campus, 423 in New Campus (UET-KSK), 216 in UET Faisalabad (UET-FSD) campus, 141 degrees in Rachna College of Engineering and Technology (UET-RCET), and 128 in UET Narowal (UET-NWL) campus.
The convocation was presided over by Governor Punjab and Chancellor UET Chaudhry Mohammad Sarwar. Vice Chancellor UET Prof Dr Syed Mansoor Sarwar delivered welcome address in which he highlighted the achievements gained in the field of research and academia, as well as future plans and goals of the institute.
He said that UET graduates were an asset of Pakistan and their role in building the country and its development was significant.
He congratulated the successful students saying that “All this is the result of hard work of your parents and teachers so always respect your parents and teachers.”
The VC also congratulated the students on the successful completion of 100 years of the university and said that the UET had completed a century of its journey which was full of success, progress, inventions, and new ideas.
Addressing the students, Governor Punjab Chaudhry Sarwar appreciated the UET VC and his team for improving the position of the varsity in the international and Asia rankings in the last three years.
He further said that the country could be strengthened only by ensuring the rule of law and constitution and giving rights to the rightful claimants.
In a lighter vein, quoting the achievements of women at the convocation, he said that quotas for boys’ jobs might have to be fixed in the coming years.
He appealed to the graduating students to cooperate with the government in taking sustainable measures to tackle important issues like poverty, water crisis, environmental pollution and natural calamities.
He also announced a prize of Rs100,000 and Rs50,000 for the four students respectively. Prize money will be given to these students and their teachers by inviting them to the Governor House.
The Punjab governor planted a tree to mark the 100-year anniversary of the university and also inaugurated a commemorative plaque.
Deans, chairmen, heads of academic and administrative offices, registrar Mohammad Asif, controller examination Mohammad Zargham Nusrat, public relations officer Shahida Nazir and members of syndicate were present at the event.
At the end of the convocation VC Prof Sarwar presented souvenirs to the Punjab governor.
