Hailey Baldwin has spoken candidly about how she struggled to help her husband Justin Bieber navigate his sobriety.

The 24-year-old model opened up about the period in the early days of the couple’s relationship when the Peaches hitmaker, 27, was still struggling with substance abuse issues.

Hailey, who is the daughter of actor Stephen Baldwin, revealed that having family members who had dealt with similar addictions helped her to assist her partner.

Speaking on the Victoria’s Secret Voices podcast, she explained: ‘There’s a lot of addiction that runs in my family, not even just my dad [actor Stephen Baldwin], but a lot of other people on that side of my family struggle with a lot of different things.

‘My dad was always really open about [his addiction] and I always appreciated that.’

She continued: ‘I was always really, really close to my dad. … He was just always, like, extremely open about why being sober was what worked for him and why we needed to be sober and what alcoholic behavior looks like, and where that comes out.’

In the VS podcast, Hailey said her father had issues with cocaine, specifically as she added: ‘Looking back on times of drug use and being in some dark spaces and having to kind of go back there and talk about it was extremely difficult.

‘I was never somebody who struggled with any substances, but that’s because I was so aware of it because of my dad.’

She added: ‘He had a really big issue with cocaine and I was like, I’m never trying it because I’m just so scared that if I try it one time, it might lead into something else.’

Hailey’s father has previously discussed his now years of sobriety, and once called it an ‘absolute miracle’ during an appearance on The Kudlow Report.

Elsewhere in the podcast, Hailey confirmed that growing up around people in recovery gave her a key insight into supporting her husband Justin – who she married in 2018.

‘I think even just the open dialogue of, “Hey, where are you at with this?” Being able to be honest,’ she explained. ‘I’ve had times where I would get nervous, like, [asking Justin], “Are you OK to do this? Because you did have a time in your life where it was not OK for you and it was like, a dark time for you. But he has very, very good self-awareness when it comes to that and is very open about it and I think that is all I can really ask for.”‘

In an earlier interview, Hailey also spoke about the difficult period when her husband was also working through his depression.
