Fans of 9 to 5 are set to get a bit of a reunion between the three main stars as Dolly Parton has been confirmed for a guest appearance on Grace and Frankie.
Netflix confirmed the news fans have been waiting so long for, tweeting: ‘It’s finally happening: Dolly Parton will appear in the seventh and final season of Grace and Frankie!!!’
Dolly, 75, starred alongside Jane, 83, and Lily, 82, in the iconic 1980 comedy about secretaries dealing with their ‘sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot’ boss.
Her role in Grace and Frankie has yet to be confirmed, but fans have been calling for her to appear on the show since its inception, to bring 9 to 5’s three leading ladies back together again.
Jane and Lily star as two unlikely friends who end up living together after their husbands announce they are in love with each other and plan to get married.
The series, which was co-created by Marta Kauffman, will end after the upcoming seventh series.
Other guest stars on the series have included Lisa Kudrow, Talia Shire, Elliot Gould, Sam Elliot and Mary Steenburgen.
9 to 5 has been a much-loved classic since its release, with Dolly’s song of the same name as the theme tune.
Jane, whose company IPC Films produced the movie, had hand-picked Dolly and Lily to co-star with her in what was initially supposed to be a ‘dark comedy’.
She revealed in an interview with the BFI, Jane revealed that she wanted Dolly for the role despite her never having acted in a movie before.
Jane thought at the time: ‘Oh my goodness, she’s never been in a movie but if Dolly was in a movie – and imagine she can’t even see her hands, you know, and she’s trying to type with her big breasts and her long fingernails.’
It took a year to convince Dolly and Lily to sign on to the project, but the finished item proved to be an enormous hit.
The trio have remained friends ever since, occasionally popping up together to the delight of fans, such as their on-stage appearance at the 2017 Emmy Awards.
Fans will have to see what the three of them have in store for Grace and Frankie, but it’s certain to be epic.
