Black Panther: Wakanda Forever has shut down production while star Letitia Wright continues to recover from an injury she sustained on set in late August.

The actress, who is reprising her role as Shuri, sister to T’Challa, in the Black Panther sequel, was involved in an ‘incident’ with a stunt rig and sustained ‘minor injuries’, according to a Marvel statement given to Deadline at the time.

She was hospitalised in Atlanta, where principal photography for the film is based.

However, The Hollywood Reporter now discloses that the upcoming Marvel movie has temporarily halted filming until early 2022, having been shooting around Wright in the intervening time period as she recovered.

The publication reports that the production hiatus is believed to be beginning the week of Thanksgiving, with director Ryan Coogler and the crew hoping to get things back up and running again in the new year.

A representative for Wright told the site: ‘Letitia has been recovering in London since September from injuries sustained on the set of Black Panther 2 and is looking forward to returning to work early 2022. Letitia kindly asks that you keep her in your prayers.’

The 28-year-old Guyanese-British actress is due to take centre stage in the sequel alongside returning performers Daniel Kaluuya, Lupita Nyong’o, Winston Duke, Florence Kasumba and Angela Bassett, after Marvel bosses announcing that Chadwick Boseman’s part would not be recast.

The King T’Challa actor died in August, 2020, after a secret battle with colon cancer, aged 43.

Wakanda Forever was also mentioned in Disney’s recent announcement of a raft of blockbuster release delays as the knock-on effect affected several Marvel movies.

It is now set for release on November 11, 2022, rather than July 8, with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness pushed back from March 25 to May 6, while Thor: Love and Thunder moves from May 6 to July 8.
