Not a drill… Insecure is ending after five seasons (Picture: HBO)

Issa Rae confirmed at the beginning of the year that Insecure season five will be the show’s last.

Alongside the announcement, Issa wrote: ‘Very excited to film our fifth and final season!

‘We couldn’t have told a complete story without the tremendous support of our audience and the faith of @HBO. See y’all soon! #InsecureHBO’.

The semi-autobiographical tale, initially based on the series Awkward Black Girl, followed Issa and pal Molly Carter (Yvonne Orji) as they navigated life and love as black women in Los Angeles.

It was announced in January 2021 that season five of the comedy-drama will be the show’s last, much to fans’ disappointment.

So why is it ending?

The actress and comedian simply felt it was time for the show to end, and she always had it in mind to conclude Issa Dee’s story in the fifth season.

Speaking to Deadline, Issa said: ‘We always planned to tell this story through five seasons, but we couldn’t have made it this far without the tremendous support of our audience.’

The official trailer gives fans a glimpse into what to expect in the final season. We last saw Molly and Issa mending their friendship, while Issa’s relationship with Lawrence went up in flames, when his ex showed up and told him he was the father of their baby.

Will Issa and Lawrence get their happy ending after all they’ve been through?

‘Prentice Penny and I are so grateful that HBO believed in our show from the beginning and kept faith in us to see our vision through the end,’ Issa added.

Insecure first arrived on our screens in October 2016, and during its five-year run, it has earned huge critical acclaim.

HBO Programming EVP Amy Gravitt said in the official announcement: ‘Issa has turned insecurity into an iconic form of comedy.’

The first episode will air on HBO on October 24 for US fans.

The first episode of season five will air in the UK on Sky Comedy October 26.
