The One Show audience were a little confused- to say the least- as they switched on their TVs to see Olympic swimmer Tom Daley chatting to former Presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton.

Tom hosted his first-ever live show this evening alongside Alex Jones, where they also chatted with Stephen Merchant, Duran Duran’s Simon LeBon and Nohn Taylor and Rhianne Barreto.

The Democrat was on the show to speak about her new book State of Terror, a political thriller about a secretary of state in the White House who suspects the US president is colluding with the enemy.

While such a high-profile interviewee is an extremely impressive debut for Tom, many of the audience took to Twitter to say how ‘bizarre’ it was to see the young Olympian tasked with interviewing the woman who almost became President of the United States.

As journalist Scott Bryan put it: ‘I’ve turned on BBC One and Tom Daley is chatting to Hillary Clinton, who is talking about nuclear weapons.’

He added: ‘Of course it is The One Show. Where else would it be?’

One person wrote: ‘Tom Daley interviewing Hillary Clinton. What even is this show?’ while another said: ‘Tom Daley interviewing Crooked Hillary Clinton is bizarre even for The One Show.’

One confused viewer pointed out that Tom and Hillary had ‘met once or twice before and are just making inane small talk.’

They added: ‘It feeds something deep inside me and I have no idea what it is.’

Twitter user Nick Toovey remarked ‘There was a decent chance that Hillary Clinton could’ve been President of the USA at the present time. Instead, she’s being interviewed by Tom Daley and Alex Jones.’

Tom previously spoke out about his ambition to move into TV.

‘Whether I go to the next Olympics or not, I have to keep diving recreationally. I’m still improving, so I don’t know is the honest answer. There are lots of options,’ he previously told Metro’s Sixty Seconds.

‘I’d also love to be a knitwear designer and a TV host doing LGBT documentaries, sport or Saturday night, shiny floor entertainment.

The One Show airs weekdays at 7pm on BBC One.
