Gotham Knights is out next year (Warner Bros. Games)

The DC Fandome event has seen new trailers released for two new DC Comics games but no gameplay footage or release dates.

Given how well received the Batman: Arkham games were, it is very strange how Warner Bros. took their foot off the accelerator when it comes to video games based on DC comics, even as their film division was trying to establish a new cinematic universe.

It’s now over six years since Batman: Arkham Knight and apart from one-on-one fighter Injustice 2, which itself is now over four years old, that was the last big budget DC game on consoles. However, the DC Fandome event at the weekend confirmed that the drought will end next year with two new games.

Gotham Knights and Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League were both delayed due to the pandemic and although they don’t yet have specific release dates their new trailers both promise a 2022 release.

The trailers don’t give away much new information though and while the Suicide Squad one is quite amusing it’s still pre-rendered, with no sign of actual gameplay. Although once again it’s implied to be primarily a shooter with even King Shark wielding a gun.

Presumably he, Captain Boomerang, and Harley Quinn have their own unique tricks, although Deadshot’s thing has always been that he’s a… dead good shot.

None of them have any superpowers so it’s still a mystery as to how they’re supposed to fulfil the game’s subtitle and ‘kill the Justice League’, who appear to be being mind-controlled by Brainiac.

There’s also no gameplay footage in the new Gotham Knights trailers, although, while it’s not introduced as such, there does seem to be a bit in the behind the scenes video. However, actual gameplay has been shown before, so that’s less of a concern.

What the story trailer also doesn’t show is much actual story, just clarifying that the bad guys are the Court of Owls and that they have a lot of faceless minions, which is always handy for a video game.

Other traditional Batman villains are also in the game though, with Mr Freeze having been shown previously and the Penguin featuring in this one (he’s also in the Suicide Squad trailer, probably because he’s one of the villains in the new Batman live action movie).

Batman and Commissioner Gordon are not in the game though, as you instead take control of sidekicks Robin, Batgirl, Nightwing, and Red Hood.

While Suicide Squad is a four-player co-op game, Gotham Knights is only two-player at a maximum and seems to be the more story-based and single-player friendly of the two.

An Injustice 3 game has been rumoured a number of times over the last few years but has never been officially announced, although at the moment the Fandome event isn’t over so there’s still time…
